DUAL ENROLLMENT
What is Dual Enrollment?
“Dual enrollment” or “College in High School” is designed to encourage students to experience postsecondary coursework (and its increased academic rigor) while still attending their own high school. In other words, students who choose “dual enrollment” have the opportunity to take college courses for college credit while still attending AAHS and fulfilling their high school credits.
Dual enrollment introduces students to the rigors of college coursework that should help them to have a successful transition for the expectations of postsecondary education.
What do I need to know about Dual Enrollment?
At AAHS students in grades 10, 11 and 12 will have the option of taking the approved courses from any of the following colleges: Allegany College of Maryland, Penn Highlands Community College, St. Francis University, or the University of Pittsburgh. Although each of the courses from the participating schools is approved for students to receive college credit, each of the schools has their own set of information and enrollment agreement for students.
Students and parents need to be aware that most college in high school course credits will transfer to the college a student decides to attend after high school. It is your responsibility to contact the student’s school of choice to see how they will accept credits. Usually if a student plans a major in for instance, a science area, and takes a science dual enrollment course, that credit will only transfer for a general education credit and not for credit in their major area of study.
