Course Description
PREREQUISITE Successful completion of Journalism elective or recommendation of the newspaper adviser. A limited number of 10th grade students will be accepted with Junior High Journalism teacher’s recommendation.
OBJECTIVES Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Interview sources using open-ended questions
- Write stories in four modes, news, sports, features and opinion
- Edit stories for focus, content, organization, style and conventions
- Implement and use a beat system to cover all school groups
- Use digital tools to capture and edit images
- Create an online edition, updated on a near-daily basis
- Create two to three print editions
- Utilize collaborative tools to streamline the production process
- Sell advertising
- Use ethics in all phases of journalism
DESCRIPTION Students enrolled in Newswriting I will work on a daily basis to create both print and online editions of the school newspaper, Mountain Echo. Here students begin to cultivate the journalism skills required to create a paper that is informative, relevant and timely.
EXPECTATIONS The students will complete all assigned beats and stories in a timely manner. The staff will work together to insure that Mountain Echo is the best publication it can be.
