How a Cabbage Patch doll inspired a teacher’s upcycling passion When she was seven years old, Introduction to Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) teacher discovered her passion for upcycling. She was determined to make sure her Cabbage Patch doll had the “best wardrobe.” She learned how to sew from her mother, who worked as a tailor, and soon began to make clothes for her doll. Years later, her passion has evolved from that Cabbage Patch doll to her Introduction to FCS sewing unit.
Upward Bound program adviser bounds in a new direction Since September of 2023, Upward Bound adviser Kelly Gallery-Price has helped point first-generation college students at AAHS in the right direction. Through a program of academic and social preparation, Upward Bound aims to give students the skills and motivation to succeed in post-secondary education after high school.
Alternative education program evolves Five minutes from Altoona Area High School, nestled between South Lloyd St. and East Crawford Avenue, lies a building that has given its residents experiences encompassing all of these words: the Stevens building. On that street corner, staff and faculty strive to achieve the mission T.E.A.M. (“Together Everyone Achieves More”). In the past decade, the founding and expansion of the Altoona Cyber Academy (ACA) has allowed them to do just that.
Scholarship opportunities offered for students Scholarships are often the front runners when it comes to alleviating college expenses. An estimated $46 billion is given in scholarships each year per the U.S. Department of Education (College Scholarship Statistics), and that doesn’t include the amount given by private sources (upwards of $7.4 billion).
